Hardy fuchias must be planted deep. When planting the top of the pot should be buried at least 4-6 inch like you would a tomato plant. This puts the main root ball below the freezing line in most areas. The first winter, fuchias like to be mulched, fuchsias marked HWP should be mulched every winter. Fuchias grow best in filtered light or morning sun, they can even grow in full sun if they are watered regularly. Fuchias flower best in part shade, too dark of shade will produce fewer flowers, full sun and not enough water, the flowers will burn. In a cold winter the plants can die down to the ground so they should not be pruned back til spring until they start to break dormancy. They can be fertilized in the spring with any good balanced time released fertilizer.
